Look for clients not jobs!
"Graduates coming out of university should look for clients not jobs!" says Sachin Nandha, at the HPD Annual Lecture Tour at Warwick University's Business School.
Is he right? What's the difference between looking for a job, and a client?
Well, there seem to be several. Firstly, there is the psychological - to look for a job has the connatation of someone desperate for approval, "please give me a chance syndrome"; whereas, those looking for a client already appreciate that employers are looking to employ skills - those that are tangible and bring instant value. Here there is a "you need me" approach!
A person looking for a client will already know what they have in their skill set, whereas those looking for a job will mostly be unsure; client seekers know what experiences they have and where they would fit into the employers organisation; whereas, job seekers are just happy to be deployed (within reason) anywhere. Job seekers will have a general idea of their employers socio-economic geopolitical interests; whereas client seekers know exactly where they can add value - and how!
